AI macropad buyer’s guide for agent workflows
An AI macropad is a small desk keypad built for agentic work: status lights, shortcuts, maybe an effort dial — not just RGB flex. Use this guide before you drop $200+ on metal.
Must-haves for agent workflows
Status that means something
LEDs should map to idle / working / done / error — not random rainbow modes.
Multi-model path
Single-model pads (e.g. Codex-only) lock your stack. Prefer software that already runs Claude + ChatGPT + more — side-by-side guide.
Software fallback
If the pad is late, lost, or USB-flaky, the same loop must work on screen. Hardware-only is a single point of failure.
Accept / Reject affordances
Dedicated keys or clear chips for the review gate.
Effort / encoder
Dial for reasoning depth or model “spend” — core to agentic control surfaces.
Honest shipping
Deposits beat vapor. Prefer refundable queues over “ships next week” with no factory reality.
